Tofunmi was born in Nigeria and is the eldest of four sisters. She has crafted a global narrative stretching from South Africa to Saskatchewan and, eventually, finding roots in Stony Plain, Alberta. An alumna of McGill University, she holds a BA in Political Science and African Studies, followed by an MSc in African Studies with Heritage from the University College London.
Furthering her legal journey in England, Tofunmi earned a Graduate Diploma in Law and successfully completed the Bar Vocational Studies, securing admission to the Bar of England and Wales. Her experiences include serving as a judicial assistant intern at the Court of Appeal in the Royal Courts of Justice, London. As a junior professional consultant at ILGA World, Tofunmi actively contributed to global 2SLGBTQI+ rights advocacy at the United Nations and represented the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn at the International Criminal Court.
Previous engagement with a UK legal charity deepened Tofunmi’s involvement in various social issues. Poised to commence pupillage in Manchester in October 2024, she aims to specialize in human rights law. Grounded in her Yoruba tribal heritage, Tofunmi’s rich cultural background significantly shapes her worldview. Her journey reflects a dedicated commitment to justice and positive societal impact, harmonizing legal expertise with a global perspective.
Grateful for the warm reception into this sacred space and time in Treaty 8 history, Tofunmi looks forward to continuing her path, guided by cultural roots and a passion for making a meaningful difference.
